THE WIZARD OF OZ

Tuesday, September 16: This song from The Wall was edited out of the movie. Roger and David share lead singing duties on it. It's the first cut on the second disc of this double album.

HEY YOU

Wednesday, September 17: The rock opera "The Wall" is largely based on Roger Waters' own life experiences and the feeling of isolation he felt from an early age. That first brick in his emotional wall happened when Roger was just 5 months old. He alludes to it in "Another Brick in the Wall Part I" - what was it?

THE LOSS OF HIS FATHER. He died in combat in World War II.

"Daddy's flown across the ocean
Leaving just a memory
Snapshot in the family album
Daddy what else did you leave for me?
Daddy, what'd'ja leave behind for me?
All in all it was just a brick in the wall.

POLAR BEARS - How to save polar bears

Tuesday, May 20:From the WhoWouldaThunkItFiles...This cool 80s song by a Canadian artist probably isn't about what you thought it was about. It's about the persecution of Jews in America after World War II.

LUNATIC FRINGE - it even has a line in there about Hitler's Final Solution. Heavy!

Wednesday, May 21: Producer Bob Ezrin used a cool kid chorus on Alice Cooper's "School's Out" to great effect then did it again even more famously on this 1979 tune.

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL

GHOST IN THE MACHINE

Tuesday, May 13: Sting wrote this song while drunk in a hotel room in Munich. He said it's about the feeling of being in love.

WALKING ON THE MOON - "I was drunk in a hotel room in Munich, slumped on the bed with the whirling pit when this riff came into my head. I got up and starting walking round the room singing : 'Walking round the room, walking round the room'. That was all. In the cool light of morning I remembered what had happened and I wrote the riff down. But 'Walking round the room' was a stupid title so I thought of something even more stupid which was "Walking on the moon."

NEAL SCHON

Thursday, April 24: Black Magic Woman was a big hit for Santana but was written by the guitarist for another great band. They released it before Santana but it never was a hit for them.

PETER GREEN, then a member of FLEETWOOD MAC wrote it.

Friday, April 25: This was Santana's first hit in 1969. About a guy who is threatening to leave his girl if she doesn't start paying more attention to him.

EVIL WAYS

Through April 18: Win tickets to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay to experience Jungala, newly open!

Through April 11: Win tickets to see RUSH at the Amway Arena April 15! One lucky winner will be upgraded to the FRONT ROW!

Monday, April 7: Up until recently, RUSH had a pretty consistent pattern of following up every 4 studio albums with this:

A LIVE ALBUM - now they do even more than that!

Tuesday, April 8: When the Signals album was coming out, the band was 4 minutes short of their consistent promise of 18 minutes an album side so they wrote this little ditty one day and recorded it the next. It ended up being their hightest charting single - the ONLY RUSH tune to break the Top 40.

WORKING MAN

Through April 4: Win tickets to see Classic Albums Live: AC/DC "Highway to Hell" at the Hard Rock Live April 11!

Monday, March 31: Everyone knows AC/DC as being from Australia, which they are, but actually, Malcolm and Angus Young AND Bon Scott were all born in this country:

SCOTLAND

Tuesday, April 1: AC/DC subbed the word "rock" for famous phrases a couple of times. They did it with "For Those About to Rock" - a title inspired by a book Bon Scott gave to Angus about Roman gladiators. When they entered the arena to fight, they woud say:

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO DIE, WE SALUTE YOU - (ouch!)

Wednesday, April 2: 1979's "Highway to Hell" was the last AC/DC album that did THIS:

INCLUDED BON SCOTT AS FRONTMAN - he died early the next year.

Thursday, April 3 - Live at Busch Gardens: Tigers are the only big cats to do THIS in the water:

DIVE

Friday, April 4: What was Bon Scott doing right before he became AC/DC's lead singer?

HE WAS THEIR ROADIE

Through March 28: Win tickets to see the Outlaws at the House of Blues Thursday, April 10!

Monday, March 24:The Outlaws were the first band Clive Davis signed on Arista Records. He came to see them at a 1974 show where they were the opening act. At the end of the headliners' fiirst set, its barefoot frontman said, in the microphone, froom the stage, "If you don't sign the Outlaws, you're the dumbest music person I've ever met — and I know you're not." Name that frontman.

RONNIE VAN ZANT

Tuesday, March 25: Which Outlaws member became part of a hugely successful country band in the 90s called Blackhawk?

HENRY PAUL

Wednesday, March 26: Outlaws singer/guitarist Henry Paul says a lot of people think this Outlaws tune is about marijuana but really it's a take on a Rolling Stones album title and a tribute to rock and roll legends like Hendrix and Janis Joplin and also...a collage of words that have nothing to do with anything but sound good together!

GREEN GRASS & HIGH TIDES

Thursday, March 27: What is the nickname given to The Outlaws?

FLORIDA'S GUITAR ARMY

Friday, March 28: From what Florida city do the Outlaws hail?

Tampa Bay

BONO of U2

Tuesday, March 11: This drummer is widely considered to be one of the best in rock music. He's multi-talented too, having penned 4 non-fiction books since he dropped out of high school as a teenager. Name him.

NEIL PEART of Rush

Wednesday, March 12: When this band first took off in the early days of MTV, the girls went wild when Rick Allen sat behind the drum kit in his Union Jack (British flag) boxers. The Queen of England, didn't appreciate it as much, however. Name that band.

DEF LEPPARD

Win tickets to see the next Classic Albums Live at Hard Rock Live Saturday, March 22 when they perform The Who's "Who's Next" note-for-note, song-for-song. Listen each afternoon through March 7.

THE OX - not because he was big and strong but because his constitution was - apparently he could eat, drink or do much more than any other member of the group.

Tuesday, March 4: Roger Daltrey's scream at the end of this Who's Next tune - has become a defining moment in rock and roll. And you get to hear it every Monday night at 10 on CBS ; )

WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN - it's the theme to CSI: Miami

Wednesday, March 5: Roger Daltrey's stage trademark is swinging the mic by its cord. What's Pete Townshend's thing? It even has a name.

THE WINDMILL - in which he swings his right arm 360 degrees against the guitar strings

Thursday, March 6: This Who member is the actual founder of the band who frequently exercised control with "a bunch of fives" - that's a a bunch of punches by the way - In fact, when he flushed one band member's drugs down the toilet, it became clear his "leader" days were over - the band fired him until he apologized three days later.

ROGER DALTREY - it was Pete Townshend who said Roger "ran things the way he wanted. If you argued with him, you usually got a bunch of fives." It was Keith Moon's drugs that got flushed. When he protested, Roger knocked him down with a single punch.

Friday, March 7: A few years ago, VH1 named "Who's Next" the second greatest album cover of all time. What were the group members supposed to be doing on that cover?

URINATING - The album cover shows a photograph, taken at Easington Colliery, of the band apparently having just urinated on a large concrete piling protruding from a slag heap. According to photographer Ethan A. Russell, most of the members were unable to urinate, so rainwater was tipped from an empty film canister to achieve the desired effect. The photo is often seen to be a reference to the monolith discovered on the moon in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey

Wednesday, February 27, 2008: Eric Clapton collaborated with Duane Allman on "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs" which was a result of his feelings of love for his best friend's wife. It was, perhaps, the most famous love triangle in the history of rock 'n' roll. Name the wife - or the best friend.

PATTIE BOYD, GEORGE HARRISON'S WIFE - and to make things even weirder, Harrison was best man at Clapton and Boyd's wedding. Apparently, the Harrison-Boyd relationship was already over by that time. In her recent autobiography, Boyd said that Harrison was cheating on her with Ringo Starr's wife, Maureen.

Thursday, February 28:Who is Clapton's primary blues inspiration? HINT: He died at 27...maybe because he sold his soul to the devil?

Robert Johnson - tormented by demonic nightmares until his death at 27 after being poisoned by a jealous girlfriend, his song "Crossroads" tells the legend he is known for. Read about it here.

Tuesday, Dec 18: Who is the only original member of Foreigner?

MICK JONES

Wednesday, Dec 19: In Spain they eat 12 grapes at midnight and make a wish on every one. Buddhist monks eat noodles. The Danes eat boiled cod when the clock strikes 12. Here in the south, we have a New Year's Eve good luck food too. Affectionately called "Hoppin' John" - what is it?

BLACK EYED PEAS - One theory is that it's tied to the siege of Vicksburg, when people had to resort to eating "cowpeas," which, before that terrible event, folks didn't eat. So now we eat them to show solidarity, or somesuch. Other theories involve being humble ("eat poor on New Year's, eat rich the rest of the year") and the fact that black-eyed peas, if you eat them with cabbage, collard greens, kale, or some other green and if you've had enough champagne, look like little pennies next to a pile of dollars, hence good fortune for the year.

"In 1974, I was 14. Even I knew the '60s were over. It was the era of soft-rock and fusion. The Beatles were gone, Elvis was in Vegas. What was goin' on? Nothin' was goin' on. Bruce Springsteen was comin' on, saving music from the phonies, saving lyrics from the folkies, saving leather jackets from the Fonz...They call him the Boss. Well he's not the Boss. He works FOR us. More than a boss, he's the owner, because more than anyone else, Bruce Springsteen owns America's heart.

Tuesday, Nov 6: In 1997, this man honored Dylan at the Kennedy Center in New York City with these words: "He probably had more impact on people of my generation than any other creative artist. His voice and lyrics haven't always been easy on the ear, but throughout his career Bob Dylan has never aimed to please. He's disturbed the peace and discomforted the powerful."

THEN PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON

Wednesday, Nov 7: Who gave the speech inducting to Bob Dylan to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1988?

It was the band's first album with Ronnie James Dio. Dio was quoted as saying the song is "about how every individual has "Heaven and Hell" inside themself, as well the ability and the choice whether to choose good or evil. The album was very successful and revitalized the group's fortunes after what many saw as the death of the band after Ozzy was gone.

Wednesday, September 5: Before joining Black Sabbath in 1980, Ronnie James Dio worked with ex-Deep Purple guitar god Richie Blackmore in this band.

RAINBOW

Thursday, September 6: No discussion of Ronnie James Dio is complete until you talk about the mano cornuta. What the heck is that?

The rock 'n' roll hand gesture widely known as devil horns - it's Italian for "horned hands". Dio didn't invent it and never claimed to. It's an Italian gesture he got from his grandmother. Something superstitious used to ward off the evil eye - or give it. Dio used it as his trademark so, he says, although he didn't invent it, he is the one who brought it into massive rock 'n' roll usage.

JIMMY PAGE

Wednesday, August 1 : Which presidential candidate had this to say about the Marshall Tucker Band: "The Marshall Tucker Band has always been one of my favorite performing groups, and in addition to providing me with many hours of enjoying their music, I'm indebted to them in other ways. While on the Capricorn Records label, the Marshall Tucker Band gathered large crowds and helped to promote my candidacy for president. The broad range of their talents and selections helped to guarantee that all kinds of folks came to hear them and to listen to my very brief campaign speeches. I was additionally honored when they played during the celebration of my inauguration. They certainly deserve a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

JIMMY CARTER

Thursday, August 2: This 3-minute 1976 hit all about a rock group paying their dues on the road and sleeping in cars is NOT about the group who wrote and performed it - even though most people think it is because it mentions their hometown and they sing about "themselves" in the first person.

Boston's Rock and Roll Band - Group leader Tom Scholz wrote the song based on conversations he had with his friend, musician Jim Masdea, who was always telling him about struggling bands trying to get signed to record contracts. Boston actually had the opposite experience of the group they sing about in the song. Rather than paying their dues on the road, Boston released a well-produced album that was an instant hit. They did not tour before releasing their album.

Friday, August 3: When they played his inauguration, ZZ Top was thinking about changing the lyrics and performing their first hit from 1975 as "Bush" - instead of the actual title. They decided against it. Name that tune.

Tuesday, July 24: This John Deacon Queen tune wasn't a band favorite. Roger Taylor recorded a drum loop under protest. They only released it as a single when Michael Jackson recommended they do so. Good thing, it hit number 1 on the rock chart AND number 2 on the R&B CHART!

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST: bassist John Deacon was hanging out in the studio with the 70s disco/funk band Chic and borrowed the bassline to "Good Times" for this tune. Not only did he write it but he also played almost all the instruments: bass, piano, rhythm and lead guitars and handclap percussion.

DEVIL HORNS - use your thumb to hold down your two middle fingers so that only the pinky and pointer are extended, forming "devil horns" (note: you must wrinkle up your nose and yell something like "yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah!" or "Rock 'n' rooooooooooooooll!" or other unprintables while holding your devil horns high above your head. It's rock 'n' roll law.)

Tuesday 7/17/07: Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler said Sabbath's first single was written as an afterthought because they needed a quickie filler song for the album. Tony came up with the riff, Geezer quickly did the lyrics, and Ozzy was reading them as he was singing." Name that tune! (from a 2004 Guitar World interview)

ALICE COOPER'S SCHOOL'S OUT - the cover was designed by Craig Braun.

Thursday 7/19/07:Some of the greatest guitar work ever in that tune, provided by Tony Iommi. Why is it extra incredible that he can play as well as he he does?

In an industrial accident at the age of 18 on his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, he lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand. Being left-handed, he used his right hand to fret the strings of a guitar. He initially thought that his days of playing guitar were over, but his boss visited with encouragement by playing a Django Reinhardt record, because Reinhardt lost mobility in the third and fourth fingers of his fretting hand in a fire. Iommi strung his guitars with extra-light banjo strings and made plastic "fingertips" out of melted detergent bottles that he covered with leather for better grip on the strings. Once he became successful, he had the tips custom-made.

Friday 7/20/07: With then rookie producer Bob Ezrin in charge, Alice Cooper had their first hit after 3 albums. On the "Love it to Death" tour, they debuted their first instrument of execution. What was it?

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER TICKET TRIVIA

Monday 7/9/07
What is (usually) the brightest planet in our nighttime sky?

VENUS - Because of its closeness to Earth and the high reflectivity of its clouds, Venus is the brightest planet in our sky. It shines pure white, and can be dazzling when it is at its brightest. It is often possible to see Venus in very bright twilight or even when the Sun is up. Unlike Jupiter and Saturn, Venus is an inferior planet (its orbit is closer to the Sun than is the Earth's). This has several consequences, one of which is that Venus is found pretty near the Sun, in the morning or evening twilight. When Venus disappears from the morning sky, you will have to wait several months to view it in the evening sky; on the other hand, the transition from evening to morning sky is made quite quickly, within a week or so.

MICK FLEETWOOD - Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie played together in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Later, Green contacted Fleetwood to form a new band. The pair desperately wanted McVie on bass and even named the band 'Fleetwood Mac' as a way to entice McVie. However, McVie decided that his pay with the Bluesbreakers was just too good to give up. In the meantime, Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood teamed up with talented slide player Jeremy Spencer and bassist Bob Brunning, who was in the band on the understanding that if and when McVie agreed to join, he would leave. This version of the band made its debut on August 13, 1967 at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival. Within weeks of this show, John McVie agreed to become the bassist for the band.
